I successfully defended my dissertation on Tuesday, December 8, and today I received the official documentation stating I am now Dr. Chen!
This photo was taken when I walked in the UC Davis Graduate Studies commencement ceremony earlier this year. Dean Jeffery Gibeling performed the hooding, and my advisor, Cassandra Tucker, walked with me. It was fun to wear the regalia (wizard robes) and celebrate the culmination of 5 years’ work.
I have many people to thank for their support and encouragement throughout my Ph.D., most of all Dr. Tucker for being an incredible mentor. I’m so thrilled I will be continuing to work with her in the coming year as a postdoctoral scholar to publish several more papers we have in the works about dairy and beef cattle welfare.
Next, I will be moving to Canada for a longer-term postdoctoral position. I’m excited to be joining the renowned Animal Welfare Program at the University of British Columbia, and look forward to investigating new research questions about dairy cattle welfare.
Of course, I’m also on the hunt for a permanent position. I’m particularly interested in academic appointments with research, teaching, and extension components, as well as non-academic positions that pertain directly to farm animal welfare.
